GRASP OPENING: Friday¹

Join us for a shared experience featuring highlights from Friday’s programme at GRASP. The openings reflect one of GRASP’s core values: that art plays a crucial role in creating sustainable change. That is why we begin each day at GRASP with an artistic experience.

Julian Abraham “Togar” is an Indonesian drummer and artist who has worked with local music communities around the world. He presents an improvisational method inspired by musical ensembles from North Sumatra, where drumming is used to communicate people’s prayers to the spirit world.

He explains: “For me, everything is connected: from the atomic level to larger social structures. I am fascinated by how even small interventions can create change and shape new, sustainable support systems.”

At Friday’s opening at GRASP, Togar will be joined by musician Xenia Xamanek. Together, they will perform an improvisational piece that conveys the principles behind Togar’s exploration of sound and his practice as a musician and artist.

Togar is in Roskilde in connection with the exhibition The Sound of, presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art Roskilde and spread across three different locations in the city: Gasværket by the harbour, the Sankt Ibs Church Ruins and Vaskeriet at Sankt Hans.

From 26 September to 8 November, Gasværket will present Togar’s project KETOK STUDIO (2020–ongoing), along with two video works, Drummer’s Gonna Drum #3 (2023) and Drummer’s Gonna Drum #4 (2026).

The performance at GRASP leads into a series of open jam sessions and workshops, where Togar will meet and play with local musicians from Roskilde as part of KETOK STUDIO.

After the performance, we will hear three short talks from different voices featured in the programme. Speakers will be announced very soon.
