- Thursday 25 September
Meet the experienced changemaker Nana Asantewa Afadzino – executive director of the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI). With a background in law and more than 26 years of experience in governance, human rights and capacity development, Nana has collaborated with organizations across the African continent to strengthen civil society and advocate for sustainable and equitable development.
Nana is deeply engaged in rethinking how development is resourced. Her recent work explores new ways of accessing and mobilizing local resources in West Africa, building resilience and reducing dependency on traditional donors. She has also been an active contributor to the #ShiftThePower movement, which seeks to challenge the dominance of Northern-driven aid and instead promote community philanthropy and locally rooted solutions.
In this talk, Nana will reflect on how community-centered approaches disrupt existing models, the opportunities and risks in the changing role of major donors such as USAID, and what it truly means to decolonize development work.
Join this session to learn more about who and what are challenging the status quo in international development, and to explore the potential of African-led models for change that are reshaping the future of philanthropy and development practice.
